Dear Parents,

November is upon us and the holidays are already fast approaching.  Students are submitting their first novel study of the year this Friday, November 6.  They have been given class time to work on it and most have made good progress.

As you know, our school is implementing the Tribes learning community program.  We are working towards demonstrating mutual respect, good listening, and appreciating one another’s similarities and differences.

Please continue to assist your child in homework and sign the planner every night.  Twenty minutes of reading at home is a daily expectation.  The book chat form for November went home with this month’s newsletter.  It is due November 27, 2009.  Last month’s book chats were evidence that the students are continuing to learn how to support answers with detail from the reading material.  Well done!

Dear Parents,

                             Happy Thanksgiving and Halloween too!

Our trip to the water festival was super!  We saw many activities which demonstrated how to conserve our water supply.

In Math we are working on patterns, data collection and analysis, addition and subtraction.

Twenty minutes of reading should be completed every night.  The source of this material can be in the form of a novel, newspaper, computer, advertisements, etc.  Be creative with your choice of daily material when reading with your child.  The book chat form for October has been sent home with the newsletter.

Our first novel study of the year has been introduced and the students have chosen and begun to read their novel.  The guideline has been glued into their Language notebook.  The due date for this assignment is November 6, 2009.

The planners that we use this year have again been purchased by the school.  Please ensure that your child is making good use of his/her planner by taking it home and having you sign it.  I enjoy communicating with you in it and your child likes that too.

                                                                                                         Sincerely,

                                                                                                         Ms. Bastien

Welcome to a new school year!

We begin our year by studying such topics as place value, patterns, healthy eating, and how to write a novel study.

You will probably notice an increase in the frequency and volume of homework for your child this year.  Look for assignments in your child’s planner.

Reading is an integral skill which your child improves every year.  Twenty minutes per day should be devoted to reading at home.  Please see the guidline that was included in the class newsletter for fun, helpful ideas try do when reading with your child.

You will be informed of assignments and events that are scheduled throughout the year, however, if at any time you have questions, please call the school or send a note.

                                                                                                            Sincerely,

                                                                                                            Ms. Bastien
