Hey!

We are continuing to work through our newest Writing Focus.

Currently, we are focusing on Narrative Writing.  This seems to be a focus on large interest in our class.

This is our assignment:

  • Imagine you are walking through a park. You are enjoying the sights and sounds around you. As you continue to walk, you come upon a duffle bag. You look inside. You cannot believe your eyes!Write a narrative story about this event.  You can have anything in the duffle bag you want, as long as it is appropriate to school rules.  Absolutely NOTHING illegal.  Write with an open-mind!

 Homework:

  1. Continue working on your Colonies of BNA Report (History)
  2. Study for Math (Chapter 3)
  3. Continue working on your Duffle Bag Mystery Narrative

 Mr. Spencer’s Class

 September 2008

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a safe, relaxing summer break.  I know I did!  September promises to be a busy month as we get back into the swing of school and learn new procedures and routines.  We have some fun events coming up this month to celebrate the return to school. It’s going to be a great year!

Teachers There are some changes to teachers this year.  Our class will have Miss White for Science, Mrs. Burton for Music and Drama, and Miss Smith for French.  I will be teaching Language, Math, History, Geography, Health, Phys. Ed and Visual Arts.

Homework  Grade 8 students will have homework or reading to do most evenings, as well as ongoing projects.  Please help your child stay on top of assignments by providing them with a quiet work area, a regular time to do homework, and the tools they need to complete assignments, such as pencils, lined paper, and a calculator. Check the class website often so you are aware of what your child should be working on at home.

School Website The school website is located at  www.tapsfalcons.com . Check out the website for information such as school hours, the student handbook, and upcoming events.  This page will be updated frequently, so check back often! My class website is located at http://www.tapsfalcons.com/spencerand it will be updated frequently with homework, upcoming events, assignments, and useful links for students and parents.  If you have a question about what is happening in our classroom, this is the first place to look.

Contacting MR. SPencer If you have a question, concern, or just want to find out how your child is progressing, the easiest way to reach Mr. Spencer is through email at spencery@lkdsb.net. You can also call the school at 519-682-2260 to speak to me or make an appointment to come in and meet with me in person.

Scholastic Book Clubs Once again, our class will be ordering through Scholastic Book Club.  Scholastic is a great way to order books for your child.  Often, prices are much lower than you will find in retail bookstores.  Plus, every order earns Scholastic Bonus Coupons that are used to buy books for all students to access through our classroom library.

Meet the Teacher This year’s Meet the teacher night will be on Thursday, September 18. More information will be sent home closer to the date.  I look forward to seeing everyone again and to meeting parents.  What’s Happening in Class? In Language, we will be reviewing and building on reading strategies.  We will also be looking at Recount writing as a review from our school wide writing project last year.  In Math, we will be exploring number relationships including prime and composite numbers, factors and multiples, scientific notation, square roots, and order of operations.   In History, we will begin with a unit on New France, and in Geography, the first unit will be on the Five Themes of Geography.  In Science, Miss White will be covering Interactions within Ecosystems.   In French, Miss Smith will reviewing key concepts from grade 7, in order to prepare the students for grade 8.
