Nutritional Breaks
TAPS uses the balanced day plan, with two 40 minute nutrition breaks at 11:15 and 1:35. Students must remain at school unless arrangements have been made with the principal. If a student needs to leave at break time, please send a note to the teacher/office.
JK to 4 students have student monitors whose job is to supervise and report problems to hall duty staff. Inappropriate behaviour may result in the removal of lunch privileges if the student does not follow lunch rules.
Glass containers are not allowed. No utensils (including spoons) are provided and students should not bring anything that needs heating. Peanut butter, nut products and caffeine laden energy drinks are not permitted.
Enough food needs to be sent for two breaks. Food not consumed is put away for the next break, as no food is permitted outside.
Classroom Lunch Rules for students and monitors
1. Students are to be seated in the classroom during lunch. If noise levels, clean-up and/or lunch classroom behaviour are a concern, the homeroom teacher or the teacher on duty may require students to remain in their assigned desks.
2. Students should finish their lunch and remain in their desks. Four minutes before recess, they may throw out their lunch, then get their coats and line up. Monitors may decide to have a helper bring the garbage can around to collect the garbage. Classroom garbages should be dumped into hall garbages at the end of lunch. 3. Students remain in class until the bell.
4. Students are to use the washrooms at the bell, and may only leave the room with the teacher on duty’s permission prior to the bell.
5. Students are not to share or trade food or drinks. If students forget their lunch, they may come to the office to phone home or get something to eat.
6. Students are allowed to talk quietly, but not to shout or yell.
7. Students are not allowed to throw ANYTHING.
8. Students cannot discipline students in the classroom. If there is ANY problem, please say, “Please go out into the hall.” Let the teacher on duty talk to the student and deal with the problem. If the student will not listen, one monitor should go and get the teacher on duty.
9. In any emergency, one monitor stays in the classroom and buzzes the office and one monitor goes into the hall to get the hall teacher on duty.
10. No food goes outside (put food back in lunch bags at the bell) and no students remain in the classroom unless supervised by a teacher. All food is put away. No food or drink should be left on the desk or floor, and any messes need to be cleaned up.
Food Plan
Monthly food plans for special lunches will be sent home. This helps reduce the amount of class time spent on collecting money. On occasion, there are other special food days for such items as hotdogs or subs – and notices about these days will be sent home at that time. Watch the Newsletter for any changes in the menu or dates.
Gum/Energy Drinks
Chewing gum is a problem at school because it finds its way onto the soles of shoes and on the underside of desks and tables. Having gum at school is discouraged. Caffeine laden energy drinks like Red Bull and Amp are not welcome at school.
