I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and happy holiday. I can’t wait to hear everyone’s stories tomorrow!

Let’s see what we’ll be working on over the next few weeks!

Language - Our writing focus remains on Persuasive writing. Students will be learning about the criteria for a good piece of persuasive writing and what tactics are useful to convince someone to agree with you. We will be examining pieces of writing and working to write our own. In reading, our focus will be on Point of View. When we reading pieces of writing, we will begin to recognize whose point of view is evident and whose might be missing. A few days a week, we will be running our “Daily 5 program”. These are center-based activities that allow each student to work at their own level.

Math - we have already started studying multiplication of two and three-digit numbers and will continue to work on that. As well, we will begin dividing by 100s and 1000s and then study how to multiply and divide with decimal numbers. Near the end of the month, we will begin studying Geometry, with a focus on angles and triangles.

Science - Tomorrow we will begin discussing our upcoming Science Fair. An information package will be sent home tomorrow. Outlines for projects are due next Friday (20th). We will also continue on our unit on the Conservation of Energy. We will be learning about different types of energy and how to conserve different types of energy.

Health - we will continue focusing on Personal Safety and Injury Prevention. Our attention will be on conflict resolution. An upcoming assignment will involve a scenario-based skit designed to teach others about how to use some conflict resolution strategies.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me or call the school.

Thanks for your support,

Mrs. Fenlon

Hi all!

We’ve had a busy November so far and the next few weeks prove to be just as busy!

In writing, we are tying up our Recount unit with our final piece focused on a special treasure we have. Students were given the information package today. They need to use the planner and success criteria to ensure they have everything they need. Our next unit will begin near the end of the month and will focus on Persuasive writing.

In reading, we have finished up our Making Connections unit and will start working on Summarizing important information. Our reading responses are coming along nicely. Students need to make sure they accurately answer the question being asked and provide at least 2 details directly from the text.

In math, we are focusing on Data Management. We’ve talked about bar graphs, line graphs and scatter plots. Next up are pictographs and working with data to find the mean, median and mode. Quizzes from our last unit, Number Sense, should have been signed and returned by now.

Science has finished and we are starting our unit on Ancient Civilizations. We are starting with Ancient Greece and students will be sending postcards to me to tell me about the environment in Greece.

Our volleyball unit is coming to an end in Physical Education. We have been working hard on our proper technique of bumping and volleying.

Student-Led conferences will be held next Thursday night. Information sheets were sent home on Monday and should be returned as soon as possible. If Thursday night does not work for you, please contact me to arrange an alternate time to come in and see your child’s hard work!

Hi Parents!

It’s hard to believe that October is here already! We had a very busy, but fun September and October promises to be the same!

In Language Arts, we have started working on our first writing focus - Recount writing. Students have been writing about personal memories in their writing notebooks and we will continue to study this type of writing in the weeks to come. In reading, we have learned the importance of making predictions and are now focusing on Making Connections. As well, we will be studying how to properly answer a higher-order thinking question. Ask your child about their daily reading responses and to tell you about our Read Aloud book, Wave by Eric Walters! They keep begging me to read more!

In Math we have just finished our chapter on Patterning. Chapter 1 Quizzes went home today and are expected to be returned with a parent signature on them. Our next focus is Number Sense. In particular, we are working on reading, writing and comparing 5-digit and 6-digit numbers. We will also study decimals and money, and then looking into adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimal numbers. Math workbook pages are often assigned for homework.

In Science, we are continuing our studies on Biodiversity. More information about a final project will be sent home in the next few weeks. Social Studies will begin near the end of the month.

In Health, we are participating in the Power 4 Bones program (www.power4bones.com). Ask your child about the first transmission we heard last week! We are wrapping up our Soccer unit in Phys. Ed. and moving onto Volleyball soon.
